What is the Sri Lanka ETA?

The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is Sri Lanka's online tourist visa. Most nationalities apply online, get approved within 24-48 hours, and present the approval letter on arrival. The ETA is valid for 30 days from entry, extendable up to 6 months at the Department of Immigration in Colombo.

How to apply

  1. Apply at https://www.eta.gov.lk — never via third-party "visa services" charging triple.
  2. Pay by card. Print or save the approval email.
  3. Show the printout (or PDF on phone) at BIA Colombo immigration.

Heads-up

  • Don't pay third parties. Search results often surface fake "Sri Lanka visa" sites that take your money and resell the official ETA at 2-3× the price.
  • Visa-on-arrival is available at BIA but costs more than the online ETA.
  • Rules change. SAARC reduced rates, free ETAs (Maldives, Singapore), and processing times have all moved since 2024.
